Punk rock band Green Day was formed in 1986 by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt.
In the band’s early days, they were part of the punk rock scene at Berkley, California’s 924 Gilman Street club. The band released its early material through Lookout! Records, an independent label.
In 1994, Green Day released their first major label album Dookie through Reprise Records. The album was a breakout success, selling more than 10 million copies in the U.S.
The singles “Longview” and “Basket Case” peaked at number 1 on U.S. charts in 1994. One year later, the single “When I Come Around” peaked at number one. The album’s two other singles “Welcome to Paradise” and “She” peaked at number 7 and number 5 respectively.
Green Day has been credited as contributing to spreading mainstream interest in punk rock music. The band’s three follow-up albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning did not reach the same level of commercial success as Dookie, but were still successful in their own right.
The release of their 2004 album American Idiot revived Green Day’s popularity, selling six million copies in the U.S. alone. The 2009 release of the album 21st Century Breakdown helped the band achieve its best chart performance yet.
The album was followed by the release of a trilogy of albums ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!, which were released in September, November and December of 2012.
Green Day’s latest release Revolution Radio, released in October 2016, debuted at number on the Billboard 200 chart.
The band has sold more than 85 million records across the world and has won five Grammy Awards.
British rock band Catfish and The Bottlemen was formed in 2007 in Llandudo, Wales. Two band members are former pupils of Ysgol John Bright, while the drummer attended Rydal PenrhosSchool.
